Vienna ~ Last day

This was our last day in Vienna and we headed to some parks and the city centre for some 'window shopping'.


Viennese City Park ~ Stadtpark.  This park holds many statues of famous historical composers and musicians from Vienna.  This is a statue of Johann Strauss, shows him in gold playing the violin and is one of the most photographed statues in Vienna.




Beautiful flowers in the garden in the form of a clock.

We had lunch in a cafe at the park and as it was a wet day, we were the only guests at lunch time!


Simple salad in thousand island sauce.


Sausage with potato chips, salad and their warm cabbage.  The sausage wasn't too bad.


Roast pork with salad and warm cabbage..... not very interesting, pork didn't taste roasted!


The cafe's signature BBQ  spare ribs ........ quite a meaty portion and this was great!


Schnitzel ....... flattened pork loin, deep fried and nicely done!  We liked this and had it again for dinner as well!



St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom)  where Mozart once worked and which is visible from almost everywhere on the tram loop.


Billa is their chain supermarket, just like Tesco in the UK and there's also a smaller establishment which is Spar.


City Hall and Beer Garden (Rathaus).  This large Neo-Gothic City Hall towers over a vast beer garden, Rathaus Platz.  It offers a great back drop complete with a full-sized outdoor movie screen which shows free films in the summer evenings.  The beer garden has food, beer and wine from all over the world and a big area for outdoor seating.




Dinner was at Figlmuller, very close to Stephansplatz, famous for their schnitzel and they sell only Austrian drinks, no Coke!  We were directed to  this outlet as the original one was full, fortunately within walking distance from each other.  Service was prompt too!


Their specialty and world renowned schnitzel, see the enormous size, it's falling off the plate!  The pork loin weighs 250 gm, superbly thin and deep fried in vegetable oil.  You can hear the mallet pounding from the kitchen.  Just yummy with some lemon juice. We ordered 2 of this @  12.90 Euro each.





Chicken Cordon Bleu .......... this wasn't too bad, nice and juicy @ 11.50 Euro



These breads were on every table and we noticed that other people were not touching this.  As the price was not stated on the menu, we didn't touch them.  Yup, need to pay, not inclusive in the dishes ordered, nothing is free!!



Potato and green salad @ 7 Euro


Mashed and  slightly roasted potato @. 2.80 Euro.

The dinner plus drinks cost 61.10 Euro exclusive of tax, which is normally 10% of the total price.

  1. The food looks yummy...not expensive if earning euro :p but the conversion is the one that kills :(

    Jo told me that food is expensive in Europe but she enjoys though :)

Biscoff Butter Cake ~ 牛油蛋糕

The recipe for this Biscoff Butter Cake is similar to my earlier post of Marble Butter Cake, just that I added an extra ingredient which is, crushed Biscoff cookies.    Instead of mixing the crushed cookies into the batter, I just sprinkled them on top of the first layer of batter and then cover with the remaining batter.   This cake is soft and moist with good texture ..... definitely a recipe for keeps!

Salted egg yolk cookies ~ 咸蛋黄酥饼 ~ CNY 2016

Salted egg yolk recipes are getting very popular these days.  There are salted egg yolk with crabs, salted egg yolk with chicken, salted egg yolk with bittergourd and salted egg yolk bun, just to name a few.  Being the inquisitive me, I tried baking the salted egg yolk cookies just to taste what's it like.   It's quite difficult to describe the taste, it's neither totally sweet nor totally savoury, it's a blend of both which makes it unique, yet delicious.


I like the small bits of salted egg yolk in the dough.  I let the dough rest in the refrigerator for more than 2 hours and it was more pliable to handle.


Recipe for Salted Egg Cookies (adapted from 'here')  ~  咸蛋黄酥饼

Ingredients

Steamed egg with minced pork ~ 猪肉蒸水蛋

This is a super comforting home-cooked dish which requires only a few ingredients.   An easy to go recipe, I added minced pork to give the dish more volume.   Kids as well as adults will love the silken smooth egg interspersed with bits of juicy meat.   Great to serve over hot rice!




Steamed egg with minced pork  ~   猪肉蒸水蛋
Ingredients

150 gm minced pork2 chicken eggs -  100 ml without shell150 ml boiled, cooled water  (Ratio is 1:1.5)1/4 tsp saltsesame oil, pepperlight soya sauce to tasteMethod Season the minced pork with some salt.Whisk the eggs with water, strain it onto a plate.Mix in the seasoned minced pork.  Remove any air bubbles.When the water in the steamer is boiling, place the plate of eggs onto the steamer plate, close lid and turn the heat to the lowest.Steam for about 14 to 15 mins., check after 5 mins.  Jiggle the plate, if centre is wobbly, it's done.Remove from steamer, garnish with some spring onions, light soya sauce, sesame oil and a dash of pepper.
