Gatwick, England ~ Vienna, Austria - I

A very big thank you to all of you who have continued to visit my blog.  Yes, I'm back and I would like to share with you pictures of my recent trip to Austria and Wales.  So, please follow me ............

On arrival in London on 5th September, we drove from London Heathrow to Gatwick and spent a night in this cosy little Bed and Breakfast, Southbourne Guest House in Horley near Gatwick.

As we had to leave for the airport very early next morning, we were told to help ourselves to the continental breakfast provided ...... waffle, bread, muffins, cheese, various types of jam, ham, cereal, fruits etc.  The owner of this B and B was very accommodating and this place is very clean and neat.  I'll certainly recommend it to people who are travelling to Gatwick.

Upon touching down in Vienna, flight was less than 2 hours, we had to retime our watches ..... Vienna is an hour ahead of London, so it's 6 hours behind Malaysia. We took a taxi and checked in our hotel ..... Pension Liechtenstein.... (Pension is German for Hotel).  Oh, the first thing that caught my eye was that there were many, many Mercedes taxis in Vienna!

Without wasting much time, we took our maps and off we went, exploring.  This is  Hofburg Palace,  a towering building overlooking Burggarten Park which serves as the emperor's palace.  Highlights of visiting the historic landmark include the Imperial Apartment, Sisi museum and the Imperial Silver Collection.  We didn't join those conducted tours, instead we explored on our own.

This is another part of the Hofburg Palace........ which is a very huge place for you to explore.

The Hofburg Palace from another angle, access from the Volksgarten (Folks Park)

Entrance to the Sisi museum.  'Sisi' is the Empress of Austria and spouse of Francis Joseph I and from an early age she was called 'Sisi' by her family and close friends.

Tired from all the walking, we retired to this Hotel Sacher to have our first taste of Viennese pastry.  Oh, you can see cafes everywhere.  Cafes offer some of the finest pastries in Vienna and a coffee and a pastry is a time honoured tradition of many of the Viennese.  Newspapers are provided and the guest at the cafe is expected to take his or  her time, talking or just relaxing and observing as the world goes by.

Cafe Mozart is located inside the Hotel Sacher and here we just sat and relaxed to rest our weary feet over some fine pastries and coffee.

We ordered some of their many mouthwatering Austrian cakes and pastries.

Their signature Sachertorte chocolate cake @  4.40 Euro ........ simply yummy!

Apricot streudel with ice cream, also @ 4.40 Euro.

Paper thin Apfelstrudel with apple, sultanas and cinnamon and vanilla ice cream, @ 4.40 Euro.

TurkischerCafe ~ Turkish Coffee  @ 5.50 Euro

Rotbusch Tee ~ Rooibos Classic Rooitea @ 4.60 Euro.

Dip this stick of sugar into the tea and mmm ........ so refreshing!

Do you want to see more pictures?  If you do, stay tuned ........

I’m developing a fresh blog plus I’m struggling to make it look good, as well as offer the best quality content. I have learned much at your web site and also I anticipate alot more articles and will be coming back soon. Thanks you.

Snow Swallow Dessert ~ 天然野生雪燕

Natural Wild Tragacanth Gum 'Snow Swallow' or Xue Yan is a gum derived from different varieties of sterculia trees.  It's actually a sap drained from the root of the plant and  the gum dries as it exudes and is then collected.  Once rehydrated will increase to about ten times in size and their white stringy, jelly like strands texture resembles that of the much prized and highly valued bird's nest.  One thing to take note when cooking this dessert is that the gum is highly soluble in water and cannot be boiled too long. Since it is 'cooling' for our internal organs, the elderlies should take this in moderation and not recommended for nursing mums for the breast milk may cause the baby to purge. Snow Swallow Dessert  ~   天然野生雪燕 Ingredients 8 gm Snow Swallow gums 10 gm red dates 10 gm goji berries 20 gm dried longan Rock or piece sugar to taste 1 litre water Pandan leaves (optional) Method Soak the Snow Swallow gums in plenty of water for at least...

Tamarind Pork Belly (Babi Assam) ~ 亚参五花肉

A very appetising dish with tangy and robust flavour of tamarind juice, red and green chillies added more oomph to the dish.  This dish will surely whet your appetite and you'll go for second helping of rice to soak up the tangy gravy.  This is a Peranakan dish but as always, there are many varieties to this delicacy.  I tweaked the recipe a bit to suit what I have in my pantry and the end result is a very yummy dish that I will not hesitate to whip up again and again. Tamarind Pork Belly (Babi Assam)  ~   亚参 五花肉 Ingredients 450 gm pork belly, cut into bite size 5 cloves of garlic, finely chopped 3 shallots, finely chopped 30 gm tamarind pulp (Assam paste)  + 250 ml water 3 green chillies 2 red chillies 2 tsp tau cheong (preserved bean paste) 2 tsp dark soya sauce 1 Tbsp brown sugar or to taste 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 tsp fish sauce 1 onion, sliced Method Mix the tamarind pulp with a cup of...

Double boiled Black chicken soup

This chicken soup is slightly different from the normal good old chicken soup as it's double-boiled with black chicken.  Flavoured with traditional Chinese herbs like sweet wolfberries /goji berries/Boxthorn fruits, Ginseng aka 'Pau Sum' in Cantonese and Yuzhu aka Solomon's seal rhizome/polygonatum, this soup is believed to be invigorating and nutritious.  According to the Chinese, the black chicken has curative value and it's above that of white chicken meat as the former has less fat. A short introduction to the traditional Chinese herbs.  'Pau Sum' helps to increase energy, enhance healthy blood circulation and also boost the immune system. Wolfberries   helps to improve vision and  nourish the lungs and kidneys. Yuzhu helps to treat dry throat, dry cough, promote production of body fluid and relieve dryness syndrome.
